U.S. Department of Commerce Announces Cancellation of $1.25M in Digital Equity Act Grants

Last Friday, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced the cancellation of $1.25 billion in Digital Equity Act grants, halting funding that had been earmarked to improve digital access and literacy nationwide.

In Maine, this decision affects $35 million that was previously allocated to programs supporting digital education and online safety for rural residents, veterans, and low-income communities. New Hampshire and Vermont will also see funding losses—$4.9 million and $5.3 million, respectively—previously designated for digital literacy, workforce development, and device access for underserved populations.

We’re following this development closely, as it impacts ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide across the country.

As Susan Corbett, Executive Director of the National Digital Equity Center, shared:

“The National Digital Equity Center is saddened by this news. We have been offering digital opportunities to Maine residents since 2018, and have provided digital skills training to over 40,000 participants.”

We’ll continue to monitor the conversation and share updates as they become available.
